Medical terminology is a prerequisite for CPC. We include it in our Fundamentals of Medicine course, so you do not have to take a separate class.
We require this foundation because we want every student to be successful. Strong basics in medical terminology, anatomy, and disease process make CPC easier to learn and give you a more solid career path.
If you already have a strong background in terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology, tell us when you enroll and we can help you decide whether Fundamentals of Medicine is still the right first step.
Yes. Strong medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology are essential for CRC success.
Risk adjustment coding is diagnosis-driven. You have to read the record, recognize chronic and complex conditions, and assign ICD-10-CM codes that are supported by the documentation. If you do not understand the language of the chart, it is much harder to identify what is reportable, what is missing, and what actually risk-adjusts.
That is why we include this foundation in Fundamentals of Medicine. We want every CRC student to start with the clinical basics that make accurate coding possible—not just exam prep.
If you already have a solid clinical or coding background, tell us when you enroll and we can help you decide whether Fundamentals of Medicine is still the right first step.
Yes. No healthcare experience is required.
If you are new to the field, start with Fundamentals of Medicine. That course builds the clinical foundation you need: medical terminology, anatomy, pathophysiology, and how to read a medical record. From there, CPC is the next step. Employers typically look for CPC first; CRC is an add-on after you have that foundation.
You will not be left on your own. The courses are self-paced, with weekly live Q&A, weekday email support, and instructor-assigned practice so you can build skills at a steady pace.
We use AAPC’s official curriculum and tools. Risk Adjustment Coding Academy is an AAPC Licensed Education Provider, so you are preparing with the same materials designed for the AAPC certification exams.
The difference is the support around that curriculum. You work directly with an AAPC Approved Instructor who monitors your progress, assigns PractiCode homework by chapter, and is available through weekly live Q&A plus weekday email. The goal is not only access to the course—it is guided preparation, so you stay on track and are ready for the exam.

The “A” stands for Apprentice.
When you pass the CPC exam without documented coding experience, AAPC issues the credential as CPC-A. It still means you passed the exam. The “A” stays on the credential until you complete AAPC’s experience requirement (or an approved practicum path) and submit that documentation.
Our CPC program includes PractiCode so you can work toward removing the “A” after you pass.
Start with the AAPC Job Board, LinkedIn, and hospital or health-system career pages. Also check remote coding employers, staffing agencies that specialize in HIM/coding, and job sites such as Indeed using titles like medical coder, risk adjustment coder, or HCC coder.
Your first credential matters. Most employers look for CPC first. After you have coding experience, CRC can open risk adjustment and value-based care roles.
We can help you think through how to present your training, practicum work, and credentials when you start applying. We do not guarantee placement.
